Webinar-March 24, 2022: Evaluating the Political Logic of the Green New Deal

The Chair in Decarbonization presents a webinar (in English) entitled “Evaluating the Political Logic of the Green New Deal”.

The webinar will include a presentation by:

Parrish Bergquist, PhD

Assistant Professor at the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University

Abstract: Despite the gravity of the climate threat, governments around the world have struggled to pass and implement climate policies. Today, politicians and advocates are championing a new idea: linking climate policy to other economic and social reforms. Will this approach generate greater public support for climate action? Here, we test this coalition-building strategy across eleven of the largest carbon-polluting countries in the world (United States, China, Germany, United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Turkey, South Africa, Indonesia, India, Japan) using large-n surveys of n >1000 in each country. In every country, we field conjoint experiments on a representative sample of residents to evaluate the marginal impact of 40 different climate, social, and economic policies on support for climate reforms. Our research allows us to evaluate whether climate policy bundles that include social and economic reforms increase public support for climate mitigation across a variety of national contexts. Our data will provide the most comprehensive test yet around the political logic of Green New Deal-style policies globally.

Parrish Bergquist studies environmental policy and politics in the United States, with a focus on public opinion and political behavior. Her research examines the development and implications of public attitudes about environmental protection, energy, and climate change; the implications of partisan polarization and nationalization for environmental policy outcomes; and how political actors and members of the public perceive, portray, and evaluate political issues, problems, and proposals. At McCourt, she teaches courses in environmental policy and statistics. In her teaching she aims to help students apply theories and insights from political science, sociology, and economics to a wide range of public policy topics.
